Bayesian Networks for Project Risk Management

Flyvbjerg and Budzier say that one in six IT projects has an average cost overrun of 200% and a schedule overrun of 70%. To somewhat improve our chance of successful delivery, we attempt to manage project risks effectively.
Management professionals apply their skills and knowledge to actively manage risks related to the initiatives their teams need to deliver. This is supported by the so-called Risk Register (aka Risk Log), which contains qualitative and quantitative information about those risks in many organisations.
This case study looks at the common ways to present risk-related information and how the tools of choice help the staff responsible for risk management benefit from the currently available techniques. In particular, we look at how Bayesian Networks (BN) are used to adequately manage IT project delivery risks.
“Many small businesses do not undertake surveys to see if they offer what their customers want because often it is too difficult, expensive, or complicated. There is now a way a small business can do this with great support and ease from Argo Computing. MCEI used their DC Portal® – Outsourced Shared Managed Service to complete an online survey of delegates to a recent Conference.
Argo Computing set up the survey online, and it was simply a matter of sending a link to the delegates. The results shown as a bar graph for each question were very beneficial, ensuring that MCEI can offer a bigger and better Conference based on customers’ wants. If you are looking for an easy solution to taking surveys, this Australian company is the way to go.”

“On behalf of Carers Victoria and specifically the Carer & Counselling team, I would like to thank you for the work you undertook updating our internal database to support our business processes around anonymous calls, carer advisory services and carer counselling services.
You and your team quickly understood our business, articulated our requirements, implemented a solution that met our contract requirements with our funders, and improved information flow and data extraction.
Once we agreed on the contract terms, the work commenced immediately and was completed on time and within budget.
The after-sale service and support staff access have also been excellent, and the responsiveness to our questions and emails has been timely and relevant.
Overall, the project has been a resounding success, a testament to your team’s hard work and dedication. We couldn’t have done it without you—thank you.

“Maranatha Christian School is a large independent school in Melbourne’s South Eastern Suburbs. Argo Computing was engaged in developing an online application form with crucial information updated in a database to streamline our online enrollment process. The aim was to eliminate input duplication for prospective parents and our staff.
The result is a user-friendly online application form, making the application process easier for prospective parents and our staff. The project was delivered on time and within budget, and the staff at Argo Computing were always available to ensure our requirements were met.”
